One “Nesting” Step That Could Save Your Baby’s Life

This just may be the most important post that I write all year long.

My husband and I are expecting our third baby boy in 9 days! The “nesting” phase has been in full throttle and I am ready. Thanks to my local fire department, I am even more ready than ever.

Nesting Check-List Completed!

  • All of baby’s clothes are organized and washed.
  • Diapers and wipes are stocked.
  • Bottles have been sterilized.
  • The house is clean.
  • A week’s worth of frozen meals is prepped in my freezer.
  • My car is clean and stocked with baby necessities.
  • My hospital bag is packed.
  • Baby gifts for siblings have been bought & wrapped.
  • Thank you cards for nurses who will be taking care of me in the hospital have been purchased.

Yes, I am feeling good about my nesting skills! However, all of these things combined are not as important as this one next step of preparation that I recommend to ALL MOTHER’S who drive with babies and toddlers in their vehicle.

The MOST Important Nesting Step That Could Save Your Baby’s Life

Get your infant car seat inspected by a certified car seat specialist. It’s FREE!

Based on a smart friend’s recommendation, I took a quick trip to our local fire department to inspect the safety and installation of our new infant car seat. Before her recommendation, I didn’t realize this service was even available. After all, I read the manual. I followed the instructions. I almost canceled my appointment thinking it was unnecessary because “I figured it out.” I am so thankful that I didn’t take the easy way out and instead I followed through with my friend’s advice. After 15 minutes at the fire station, I was quickly humbled as I learned that my car seat was NOT installed properly like I so confidently thought it was.

Not only did I learn that my infant car seat was improperly installed but I also learned that my two-year-old has been driving around in an incorrectly installed car seat as well. My heart sank when the firefighter told me this and removed my son’s seat so he could reinstall it properly. There is no cargo more precious than my children. Immediately I felt guilty and thankful all at once. The firefighter was so kind and gracious as he explained to me that I am not alone. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly. THAT. IS. SCARY. I immediately called my mother, who often drives my children and asked her to join me at the fire station to have her seats inspected as well. You guessed it. Her seats were incorrectly installed too 🙁 My husband is bringing his car seat in this week.

Please, I can not urge parents enough to bring your car seats to your local fire department for inspection. No matter how well you think you have installed your seat, it is well worth taking advantage of this FREE SERVICE that could save your child’s life. Worst case, you get a pat on the back for a job well done and you can sleep peacefully. But if you’re like most of us untrained parents relying on a car seat manual, you will learn a few things and you’ll leave with a safer situation for your baby. No matter what, you and baby win!
